Dance the Dream of Life: A Conversation with Monica Brown

Why do you practice/study Thai Bodywork?
Thai Bodywork came as a natural outgrowth of my yoga practice, a moving meditation. I enjoy helping people feel better.

Why do you practice yoga?
Initially, I came to yoga because I was intrigued by the idea of a mind/body/spirit system of health, one which helps to bring these disparate parts of the self into harmony. And through practicing yoga, I have experienced considerable relief from the pain and discomfort of my scoliotic curve.

How do you think the two work together?
Thai Bodywork is like yoga in that: it is an ancient energy-based healing system which helps to bring the mind/ body/spirit complex back into balance; it includes yogic stretches; it facilitates deep relaxation, release of stress and tension, and increased flexibility.

What can I expect from a session with you?
You can expect deep tissue work to release tension; yogic stretches to increase flexibility and range of motion; and a focus on your specific area(s) of pain or discomfort.

What makes your Thai session unique?
Coming to Thai bodywork with seven years of experience as a yoga instructor helps give me insight into the ways in which people hold stress and tension in their bodies; and helps me offer suggestions for ways in which to release some of that tension daily with yoga postures.

Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by those who gracefully and passionately dance the dream of life; by those who strive to increase peace, love and light in the world; by those who live with humanity in a compassionate way.

Favorite Thai or yoga pose/stretch?
I am a big fan of pigeon pose and all of its variations.

Least favorite Thai or yoga pose/stretch?
Not a fan of having my feet walked on.

What is your greatest wish for your clients during a session with you?
To be able to enjoy this space and time for relaxation, and to leave feeling better than when they arrived.

Favorite Thai experience (either giving or receiving).
Having a client tell me that she could feel energy radiating out of my hands.

What else do you do... besides Thai Bodywork & Yoga?
I am a visual artist (www.monicajbrown.net), dance enthusiast, and lover of trees!

Something most people don't know about you...
I love Indian food, and might even be a vegetarian if I didn’t like Tandoori chicken so much!
