Oh my aching head, back, shoulder, knee...

Relief from Chronic PainPain! It's no fun. We all get it. Some more than others. Some more often than others. Even those of us who feel like we take care of ourselves and live a pretty healthy lifestyle.

So what's a body to do?
Thai Bodywork.

(Okay, you had to know I was going to recommend one of our services, right?)

But seriously. It works. And here's why...

(Excerpted from my school's most recent newsletter, written by Chuck Duff)

There is an epidemic of pain in our culture, and unfortunately, pain conditions are often misdiagnosed, misunderstood and mistreated.

In one study quoted by Dr. Janet Travell, a group of physicians found that over 70% of the patients who had come to their clinic reporting pain had myfascial trigger points that were responsible for the pain, meaning that it could be resolved using non-invasive techniques. Unknowing physicians not familiar with Dr. Travell's work, however, will often diagnose these conditions as more serious medical problems, leading to unneeded expense, invasive procedures, and continuing or worsening pain.

The good news is that trigger points can often be resolved using relatively simple techniques of compression and consequent stretching, producing seemingly miraculous resolution to long-standing pain symptoms. They must be dealt with in a specific way however -- it generally doesn't do much good to miss a trigger point by an inch, or to try and force muscles to stretch before taut fibers have been resolved.

I have found that in their own way, over a period of many hundreds of years, expert Thai practitioners came to understand some of the phenomena of trigger points and referred pain, although the language they would use to describe them is quite different. I have made a careful study of hundreds of Thai techniques and sequences, and I can see similar therapeutic insights buried in the work. However, teaching tends to focus on techniques and sequences, and the therapeutic approach is not often conveyed to students in a way that they can use effectively in their practice to help people.

Clinical Thai Bodywork Shoulder pointsI created Clinical Thai Bodywork as a method to teach my students how to solve specific client problems using a Thai massage framework. I borrow from the brilliant insights of Dr. Travell, ideas from meridian-based acupuncture and osteopathic bodywork, and a reformulation of some of the traditional asanas and sequences in this work.

I have had amazing results in my own practice, and hear success stories from my students almost daily. We are often the last recourse for clients who have been failed by allopathic medicine. It is a wonderful thing to see hope return to people who have resigned themselves to a life of crippling pain.

There is also a social component to my desire to spread this work.

Our healthcare system is an economic monster that is becoming more of a burden with each passing month on people and businesses who cannot afford the additional expense.

It is sad to watch this worsen year after year. I often see clients who have undergone tens of thousands of dollars of misguided treatment, when a few hundred dollars of thoughtful, myofascially oriented treatment was all they needed to make their pain go away.

The Thai Bodywork program is unique in its dept and breadth. Our entire focus is to produce professional Thai bodyworkers who understand how to construct therapeutic sessions and how to successfully address a wide range of pain and dysfunction safely and effectively.
