There Are No Ordinary Moments: A Conversation with Dawna Matthews

Why do you practice yoga?
To feel balance, harmony, and the juiciness of life.

Why do you teach yoga?

As a yoga teacher, I seek to give my students the gift of peace and renewed personal power by cultivating gratitude and joy, thus unleashing yoga’s transformative healing power. I want to assist and support individuals on their path so they can taste the nectar of a juicy blissful life.

What style of yoga do you teach what is it all about?

Deep Yoga- is a a yogic system based upon Hatha and Ayurveda that goes deeply into the mind/body/soul connection delivering greater self-understanding, purification, inner-healing and expanded consciousness.

What makes your yoga classes unique and who should take them?

My classes are open to all! I offer creative sequencing, nurturing guidance, and a reminder with every breath that you are a sacred gift to the world. My classes are a combination of Hatha flow infused with lighthearted fun and Yogic philosophy which enable the individual to go within and connect with their mind/body/and soul whether you are in a restorative or vitalizing class. I love to play music in class from healing mantras to electronica as well as have some fun.

Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired greatly by the beauty in the universe- an awesome sunrise, a sweet sunset, the birds chirping, the full moon glistening on the water, twinkling stars- on and on! Abundance surrounds us and this reminds me of the radiant light within myself and within each person; and all that beauty inspires me to spread that amazing light into the world through yoga.

Real life yoga lessons?

There are no ordinary moments- Be Here Now and don't forget to breathe and smile!

Birthday:

May 10

Hometown (and where else have you lived):

Hometown: Houston, Texas. I have lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina; San Diego, CA; St. Thomas, USVI; and now Chicagoland!

Favorite yoga pose:

It changes all the time, but I do love camel pose- I love having the heart open! I also adore sun salutations.

Least favorite yoga pose:

This too varies; but once I'm in the midst of the pose I open myself to the lesson, healing, and gift it brings.

Favorite Yoga Experience:

I love to see/feel yoga spill over into areas off the mat.

What else do you do, besides yoga?

I love to cook, read, travel, write, listen to music, and dance! I am also a novice knitter.

Something most people don't know about you:

I would love to learn how to spin records and be a DJ. It would be so much fun to mix beats from wide varieties of music and lift people up with the universal language of music.
